Do hand sanitizer products, such as Purell, kill viruses?

These products seem to do a good job of killing bacteria, but do they also kill common viruses such as Herpes Simplex or stomach viruses?

Being a nursing student and recently taken microbiology, I have actually done an experiment with one of these products. They do not kill viruses because viruses are not alive until they enter the body and obtain a sample of its victims DNA. This is why they are so hard to cure. To answer your question, applying the hand sanitizer alone will not kill germs and bacteria. When applying them you should briskly rub it on your hands. It is the rubbing action along with the ingredients in the sanitizer that kills the bacteria.

The FDA does not permit antiviral claims for products like this. That does not mean Purell does not kill viruses, only that the manufacturer cannot claim it does. Ethyl alcohol (the active ingredient in Purell) kills viruses such as HIV, Avian flu (H5N1), Herpes and Hep A. You connect the dots... Report It

of course not! all they kill are your hand cells and the bacteria on them
Well in theory they should not kill a virus. They say on the bottle anti bacteria. This means it only kills bacteria. Although some viruses may be killed by it, it just has not been tested on a virus.

Alex
Check with the manufacturer
Well, Purell kills 99.9%of germs and bacteria, but I don't know how well it does on viruses, they can be pretty insidious...You might check with your doctor.
My brother in law did a study on this in his college lab and it kills viruses just as well as bacteria and germs
