I've heard somewhere that its possible to contract viruses through JPEG images in a email message. But Is this true? Then what can I do to protect my computer from becoming infected?
I only avoid exe programs only. Nothing else.. not even rar/zip files because I feel it's safe if I don't run any of the programs inside of it.

It is possible to get a virus through pretty much any file that requires using a program on your pc to open it.
You can protect yourself using good antivirus software, which generally has an option to scan attachments before opening them. Just make sure you keep your virus scanner up to date, since new viruses are discovered all the time.
Additionally, if you use Outlook Express for mail, consider using something else (such as Mozilla Thunderbird) as many virus programs are created to specifically target Outlook Express, and exploit its weaknesses, and those kinds of virus generally won't be able to do anything if you use another email client.
Overall, be wary of emails you get. If it seems shady, even if froma friend, don't open it.
